About
Potsch Potschka is a renowned German composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose career spans over five decades of groundbreaking rock and world music history. Born on March 1st, 1952, in Würzburg and currently based in Berlin, Potschka has established himself as one of Germany's most versatile and influential guitarists.
Musical Roots and the Berlin Rock Scene
Originally trained in classical piano and cello, Potschka eventually followed his passion for rock guitar. In 1973, he moved to Berlin and joined the politically charged rock outfit Lokomotive Kreuzberg (1974–1977). This move proved to be a turning point, as it brought him together with musicians Herwig Mitteregger and Manfred Praeker.
In 1977, the trio teamed up with keyboardist Reinhold Heil and the iconic singer Nina Hagen to form the legendary Nina Hagen Band. Their raw energy and innovative sound revolutionized the German music scene. Following Hagen's departure in 1979, the remaining members rebranded as Spliff, becoming one of the most successful and defining bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) era.
International Exploration and Studio Work
After Spliff disbanded, Potschka relocated to Spain in 1986. There, he co-founded the short-lived project Froon alongside his former bandmates Heil and Praeker, as well as Lyndon Connah, scoring a minor hit with the track Bobby Mugabe. In 1993, he experimented with German-language rock once more under the moniker Potschka/Perxon.
Returning to Berlin in 1990, Potschka built his own recording studio in 1994. Since then, he has worked extensively as a producer and session guitarist while continuously evolving his own artistic voice. His multi-instrumental talents span across the electric and acoustic guitar, cello, mandolin, keyboards, and percussion.
Solo Career and World Music Innovations
Potschka's solo discography highlights a deep fascination with Mediterranean, Spanish, and Arabic influences, merging intricate acoustic guitar work with ambient and world music soundscapes. Over the years, he has collaborated with exceptional musicians, including percussionists Minas Suluyan and vocalists like Walter Batzler, Nasser Kilada, and Egypt's Aida El Ayubi.
