About

Central Park – Progressive Rock Pioneers from Munich

Formed in 1983, Central Park is one of the most distinguished representatives of Germany’s progressive rock scene. Known for virtuosic musicianship, intricate compositions, and melodic depth, the band blends rock, jazz, and classical influences into a signature sound. The original lineup—vocalist Heiko Möckel, keyboardist Jochen Scheffter, guitarist Hans Ochs, bassist York von Wittern, and drummer Artur Silber—crafted music that was ahead of its time.
Throughout the 1980s, Central Park built a strong following through live performances in Munich and the surrounding region. Despite their creative momentum, no studio album was released during this period. In 1989, just before a planned record deal, the band disbanded following the departure of singer Heiko Möckel.
After a 16-year hiatus, the original members reunited in 2005. They resumed the recordings begun in the 1980s, culminating in the release of their debut album, Unexpected (2006), which was accompanied by archival live concerts and a documentary. With this release, Central Park successfully translated the musical vision of the 1980s into the modern era, reigniting interest in the progressive rock scene.
In the following years, the band released additional albums and live projects, including Reflected (2011) and Live! – The Unexpected Concert (2008), showcasing both new compositions and classic Central Park material. During this period, lineup changes shaped the band’s sound: Heiko Möckel alternated in the vocalist role until Bärbel Kober ultimately took the position, bringing fresh energy and new dimensions to the music.
In the late 2010s, Central Park further expanded their musical palette. Albums such as At the Burial Vault (2018) and various acoustic projects demonstrated the band’s ability to reinterpret complex progressive rock arrangements with subtlety and nuance, while preserving the depth and integrity of their music.
Keyboardist and composer Jochen Scheffter remains the central force behind the band, guiding its sound from the very beginning, leading the reunion, and ensuring that Central Park maintains its distinctive musical identity. Drummer Artur Silber was replaced by Holger Röder in 2013, followed by Arnold Zöhrer in 2017. Guitarist Hans Ochs departed in 2020 and was succeeded in 2021 by Schorsch Hampel.
Today, Central Park embodies the creativity and innovative spirit of German progressive rock—a project that has sustained musical passion, evolution, and consistency over decades.
