ART OF INFINITY – Sonic Journeys Between Art Rock, Ambient and Cosmic Space

The story of ART OF INFINITY begins in October 1996 on the Dutch coast. Thorsten Sudler-Mainz and Thorsten Rentsch retreat to a house by the sea, bringing with them a complete recording studio, an array of instruments and an idea: to create music unconstrained by conventional genre boundaries.
What emerges is a distinctive sonic universe spanning art rock, ambient, progressive rock, electronic music and atmospheric pop. The vast, cinematic soundscapes of Pink Floyd are an unmistakable influence, yet ART OF INFINITY soon establish a musical language entirely their own – expansive, meticulously layered and deeply atmospheric, combining electronic textures, progressive structures and rock dynamics with a strong sense of emotion and space.
Their debut album, New Horizon, arrives in 2000. Four years later, ART OF INFINITY release Dimension Universe, their second and to date most successful album. By then signed to BSC Music, the duo find a natural home on the company’s Prudence label, which also releases Endless Future in 2008 and Raumwerk in 2012.
Sudler-Mainz and Rentsch never conceive ART OF INFINITY as an isolated studio project. Throughout their recordings, they invite an impressive cast of guest musicians to expand the duo’s musical palette, among them guitarist Klaus “Major” Heuser, multi-instrumentalist Matthias Krauss, violinist Thomas Kagermann and bassist Marius Goldhammer, alongside numerous vocalists, instrumentalists and percussionists. Across four albums, these collaborations help create a body of work in which progressive rock, ambient, world music and electronics merge into a highly individual form of cinematic art rock.
A defining moment comes in 2012, when ART OF INFINITY perform as a six-piece ensemble at the Bochum Planetarium – an almost ideal setting for music built around space, atmosphere and imagination.
Then, for many years, silence.

But the music never disappears. More than a decade later, Sudler-Mainz and Rentsch begin revisiting their archives and looking at their work from a new perspective. In 2025, the two remix albums The Art of Cinematic Audio – Part 1 and Part 2 reveal the cinematic dimension of ART OF INFINITY’s catalogue in a new light. In 2026, the atmospheric miniature Not of This World is chosen to open the Prudence compilation Echoes in Pink, reconnecting the project with its roots while pointing towards what comes next.
With “The Silent Awakening,” released on October 27, 2026, ART OF INFINITY now begin a new chapter. For the first time in 14 years, the duo return with completely new music.
The title could hardly be more appropriate: a silent awakening – and the return of a project that has never been interested in chasing trends. ART OF INFINITY still think in widescreen images and distant horizons, creating music as journey, as space, and as an alternative to the speed of the moment.
