Yodeling is far more than a musical technique. It is a living cultural tradition, an immediate expression of joy and vitality – and, in the case of Barbara Lexa, an important part of her family history.
With “Jodel-Retrospektive – 30 Jodler-Lieder aus 150 Jahren”, Barbara Lexa creates an extraordinary musical bridge between past and present. At the heart of the project is her mother, Reserl Mayer-Lexa, who performed as a yodeler, musician and actress and played a defining role in Barbara’s own musical development.

Born in 1967 into an exceptionally musical family, Barbara began singing together with her mother at an early age. She learned guitar and piano and later made yodeling an important part of her own artistic life. Her musical journey has taken her far beyond Bavaria, including performances in Japan, Brazil, Iceland and Oman. Since 2012, she has also been passing on her experience and enthusiasm through her own yodeling courses.
“Jodel-Retrospektive” reaches even further back into this musical history. Historic recordings from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as from 1980, bring back to life a world in which yodeling and traditional folk music were a natural part of family and social life.
This is precisely what gives the album its special appeal: it does more than document a bygone era. It allows us to hear how a musical tradition can be passed down within a family, transformed over time and brought to life again for a new generation.
