Description
With their new single “San aufn Weg,” Williams Wetsox pay tribute to one of Austria’s most distinctive and important singer-songwriters: Sigi Maron. Their heartfelt interpretation will be released on September 25, 2026, by Focus.
Williams Fändrich first heard the song in the early 1980s during a live broadcast on the Bavarian radio station BR2. Both the song and its performer left a lasting impression on him, and the music of Sigi Maron – who passed away far too soon – has remained a source of inspiration ever since.
Many years later, Williams Wetsox have now brought “San aufn Weg” into their own musical world. Their version preserves the poetry and hopeful spirit of the original while adding the unmistakable character of the band: honest, warm and earthy Bavarian blues.
The song tells the story of two people leaving pain, sadness and lost time behind. Before daybreak, they gather their belongings and set off together. Streams, forests, birdsong, fresh morning air and the rising sun accompany them as they search for a future that promises more than the life they have known.
The refrain’s image of sand beneath their shoes as they travel towards a fairytale land becomes a poetic metaphor for courage, change and hope. This fairytale land is not necessarily a real destination. It represents the belief that something new can begin beyond disappointment and stagnation.
Musically, the recording combines traditional blues elements with a relaxed but steadily moving groove. Williams Fändrich’s distinctive voice and expressive guitar playing form the heart of the track. Mario Fix adds warmth and atmospheric depth with his keyboards and Hammond organ, while drummer Hans Mühlegg provides the song with its natural pulse.
Produced by Fabian Exter at Forst Sound Studio, the recording gives the musicians plenty of room to breathe and retains the immediacy of a real band performance. Melodic guitar passages, warm organ textures and the expressive Bavarian dialect turn “San aufn Weg” into a deeply personal yet respectful tribute.
Since 1980, Williams Wetsox have stood for their unique “Blues aus da Hoamat” – blues from their Bavarian homeland: authentic, independent and rooted in real life. With “San aufn Weg,” the band honours an extraordinary songwriter while demonstrating that a truly great song never loses its relevance. Its sound may evolve, but its message continues along the road.
