About
Benedikt Jahnel is one of the distinctive pianists and composers in European modern jazz. His music combines lyrical melodies with complex rhythmic and harmonic structures – carefully conceived, yet always open to spontaneity and unexpected turns.
At the heart of his work is the Benedikt Jahnel Trio, whose music is shaped by long-standing trust and a remarkable degree of improvisational freedom. The ensemble has recorded for ECM Records since 2012. Albums such as Equilibrium, The Invariant and Modular have received international acclaim, highlighting Jahnel’s refined sense of form, sound and atmosphere.
He is also a member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble Cyminology and has worked with musicians from both the European and American jazz scenes. His concert tours have taken him to nearly 50 countries, with appearances at the Montreal Jazz Festival, JazzBaltica and Carnegie Hall in New York. Among his musical collaborators are Phil Woods, Charlie Mariano, David Friedman, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Dave Liebman and John Abercrombie. His early career included the Bavarian and German national youth jazz orchestras as well as max.bab, the band he co-founded as a young musician.
Alongside music, Jahnel has pursued an equally distinguished academic career. He earned a doctorate in mathematical physics, completed his habilitation in stochastic mathematics and is now Professor of Applied Stochastics at Technische Universität Braunschweig. For Jahnel, music and mathematics are not opposing worlds but closely related ways of thinking. Both explore the interplay of structure and freedom, order and surprise – a tension that also defines his unmistakable musical voice.
