He's The Light
Description
The Afro American Albert C. Humphrey, who is originally from Los Angeles/California, has made Munich his home and became a local personality as well as an institution during the last four decades. After returning to Germany, where he was stationed as a soldier, he became a singer, bandleader, actor, entertainer, moderator and gospel choir director. He formed his bands “Albert C. Humphrey and His Backyard Blues band”, “Albert C. Humphrey and His Roots of Blues”, “Albert C. Humphrey and His Music Magic” and his gospel choir “Albert C. Humphrey and His Voices of Gospel”. He has often performed for German Radio, television, leading companies and at many famous music festivals throughout Europe. Despite his impressing success Albert C. Humphrey has always found it very important to promote peace and tolerance and to be a leader against (the self-experienced and still existing) racism. With his trio “Roots of Blues” and with his meanwhile more than famous “Backyard Blues Band”, he never fails to captivate his fans with his magnificent and smoky voice or through his diversity of jazz, soul, blues through to The American Songbook à la Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. Albert C. Humphrey has also another side which is deeply religious. As a child he sang in the gospel choir of the Community Baptist Church in Compton/California, where he learned how his black brothers and sisters sang their prayers to God and managed to say much more with their music than simple words. It was fate that Albert C. Humphrey was asked in 1991 to take over the leadership of the gospel choir from the second largest church in Munich. Albert C. Humphrey could now make one of his dreams come true, because one of his major ambitions in life was to spread the word of God in addition to his blues and jazz programmes. It was in May 1999 when he founded his own gospel choir “Albert C. Humphrey and His Voices of Gospel”. Suddenly the project took on professional character. Despite concerts that are regularly sold out, Albert C. Humphrey is not interested in profit or achieving his own success but in preaching the Christian message. Whenever possible he donated a portion of the choir’s profits to charities such as Unicef, Bread for the World, Colibri, Autistic Children, various associations supporting homeless people in Munich, Doctors without borders as well as the association from Sissy Pöschl “Licht und Schatten e.V. Landshut” which builds homes, hospitals and schools for homeless children in Ecuador. At his last major gospel concert he and his choir were able to make a donation that made it possible that one house was built for the homeless in Ecuador. Although Albert C. Humphrey was born in the ghettos of Los Angeles with his eight brothers and sisters and grew up very poor, his parents always taught him, that no matter what you have, even if it is not much, it is always most important to have God in your life. Love and peace was the message of Jesus of Nazareth whether one sees him as a god or not. He gave us hope for a better life. And precisely that message is what Albert C. Humphrey and His Voices of Gospel shared with his audience at every concert. Albert C. Humphrey, a singer who knows the truth.
