"Black Guitar" is the first Leni Stern album which has its focus on her songwriting and her singing. "A while back I decided to sing a few blues-songs in the middle of my instrumental sets. I was amazed at the response. It seemed to be a kind of startled recognition... something to do with the revealing nature of the human voice, as if it were saying, 'This is who I really am'. So I decided to work more singing into my set and look further into the power of lyrics and songs", Leni explains this surprising new turn in her recording career.

With this album she ignores all boundaries between the realms of jazz and pop. Backed by prominent friends from the New York scene such as Dennis Chambers, Don Alias or David Mann Leni Stern delivers intricate grooves, delicate melodies full of subtle moves, sonic finesse, bluesy undertones and first rate lyrics. Larry John McNally, best known through his work for Bonnie Raitt, proved a congenial partner in composing and producing the tracks on "Black Guitar".
