Space Patrol

For 40 years now, German TV-series „Raumpatrouille – die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffs Orion“ („Space Patrol – the Fantastic Adventures of Spaceship Orion“) has been hailed as a true classic of the Science Fiction genre – and also its soundtrack is regarded a cult classic.

The colourful and innovative arrangements and extraordinary melodies of composer Peter Thomas surprised the listeners with their wealth of hitherto unheard sounds – the music became an instant hit. Luckily everybody involved realized that this soundtrack was a real masterpiece – and thus it was issued as an LP simultaneously with the first TV airing of the “Space Patrol”-series in 1966 – not a common thing in the music industry in those days!
Today most experts regard the title track “Raumpatrouille” (“Space Patrol”) as the most outstanding melody in the rich oeuvre of Peter Thomas – even though the prolific workaholic has penned more than 100 movie – and 600 tv-soundtracks in the course of his remarkable career!
But the title track is not the only highlight – with catchy tunes as the legendary “Piccicato in Heaven” or the riff-heavy “Bolero On The Moon Rocks” , with its mixture of jazz and avant-garde electronics this album sounds as interesting and fresh today as it did back then. For the Sci-fi-soundtrack genre it may well be as important a milestone as the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” was for pop!
This fantastic Original Soundtrack is now re-released in two attractive formats: 1) as a strictly limited 180g Vinyl LP, with all 1000 copies personally signed by Peter Thomas himself, and accompanied by an 8-page logbook containing the historic private notes of the composer; 2) as a 6-page Dpac-CD with a 16-page booklet and 14 bonus tracks carrying more than 20 minutes of unreleased music.
Two wonderful gems for the huge and ever-growing cult following of spaceship Orion!!
