Information on album
Leni Stern releases Kindness Of Strangers, her first full length album in 3 years featuring new songs in a lush orchestral setting.
Guitarist/Songwriter Leni Stern returns to the forefront of modern music with Kindness Of Strangers, her first full length album of new material in three years. Featuring 8 new songs, framed in a lush orchestral setting, Kindness is the apex of a brilliant 15 year recording career. The follow up to 1998's critically acclaimed Recollection (Top Ten of the Year - Billboard Jazz, Performing Songwriter D.I.Y.), Kindness finds Leni adding yet another feather to her cap: orchestrator. Working closely with co-producer George Whitty and composer/arranger Joseph Smith, Leni has constructed a record of unconventional beauty. Featuring the talents of some of New York's top musicians (Kenny Wollesen, Keith Carlock - drums, Don Falzone, Jay Anderson - bass and Daniel Sadownick - percussion), the music surrounds you and seduces you at the same time. This is music in the vein of Pat Metheny's „Secret Story“, and Gil Evan's work with Sting. It begins with the anthemic "I Call You" dedicated to Leni's husband-guitarist, Mike Stern and the mid-tempo, bluesy "Rescue My Heart." "Carry Me" is a gentle love song reminiscent of early Joni Mitchell. The title track, "Kindness Of Strangers," with it's Steely Dan style harmonies, focuses on the plight of the homeless and the good deeds they often depend upon. The album's centerpiece, the epic - „Vedo Il Tuo Viso (I See Your Face) was commissioned for the 2 Agosto festival held annually of Marco, a 6 year old that had half of his face ripped apart by the explosion. in Bologna, Italy. The festival commemorates a neo-facist terrorist attack which left 85 people dead, mostly school children; over 160 more were seriously injured. As Leni writes in her liner notes, "I wrote the song when I discovered the story
He grew up to be a famous painter... Marco's father sent me a pile of books that had been written over the years about the events of Aug. 2nd. Among them was a transcript from the trial that showed...photographs of most of the victims along with a list of names. Some 80 little faces lay over my scoring paper as I wrote the last movement by setting their names to music."
This piece is dedicated to them.
Kindness also features two cover songs, first the song "La Soledad," by Cuban Neuva Trova composer Pablo Milanes and George Whitty gives the jazz standard, "You Won't Forget Me" a Gil Evans-esque treatment. The album's only instrumental, "Resonance" began as a free-form jam in the studio, but was then orchestrated by Joseph Smith. The result is a stunning and sublime third-stream work that closes the album.
