Information on album
Rupert Hine has made his mark in the history of popular music in many different ways: Leading the remarkable groups Quantum Jump and Thinkman, releasing a number of highly acclaimed soloalbums, and producing outstanding records for other artists like Chris de Burgh, The Fixx, Howard Jones, Thompson Twins, Bob Geldof, Tina Turner, The Waterboys, Underworld, Milla, Edzio, Duncan Sheik, a.o. In various side projects the soft-spoken english gentleman has worked with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Dave Gilmour, Suzanne Vega, Dave Stewart, Salif Keita, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and many others. "The Deep End", his first solo album since 1983 and recorded alternatly in London and Paris, marks the last time that Rupert has shared the songwriting with his longtime creative partner Jeanette Obstoj. It contains a collection of deeply personal, but very subtle songs. Encouraged by his friends Howard Jones and Peter Gabriel the singer/keyboardist/composer has put more emphasis on his singing than on previous outings. Aided by prominent collaborators Carl Hyde and Rick Smith, both members of Underworld, and Phil Palmer, known from his stints with the Dire Straits or in Eric Claptons Band, Hine has delivered what many consider his finest effort to date.
"The Deep End" is Rupert Hine’s sixth solo album to date. Its tracks were assembled and finished during a three year period in London. "The Deep End" is a vintage Rupert Hine album, but one like you’ve never heard from him before. For the first time in more than fifteen years Hine did not predetermine a concept behind the album. While each of his last albums overtly dealt with a general topic and global concerns, the songs on "The Deep End" only have a common undercurrent: They are of a much more personal nature and display mainly the ideas and feelings that exist within, and occasionally between, the two writers themselves, Rupert Hine and his longtime creative partner Jeanette-Therése Obstoj. Among the many session cracks, Rupert Hine has worked with during his recording career, a nucleus of renowned musicians has evolved, that supported him on "The Deep End" with their exquisite and tasteful playing. A number of tracks feature the excellent guitar work of Phil Palmer (Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading), others are graced with the equally fantastic fretwork of Jamie West-Oram, a member of The Fixx most wellknown for his work on several Tina Turner albums. Steve Farris from Mister Mister and Michael Witzel (Bliss, Chris de Burgh) are among the players. Underworld-members Kary Hyde and Rick Smith have not only contributed their playing-skills, but co-written the track "The Shallow End"."Karl and Rick have also encouraged me enormously, particulary with the vocals", Rupert says. "That is one reason why I have enjoyed singing on this album than ever before."
