Important steps along the way:
A four-time winner of the coveted Gibson Award for Best Female Jazz Guitarist (1996-1997-1998-1999), the German-born artist left Munich in 1977 to study composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Shortly after relocating to New York City in 1980, she began leading her own quartet which included guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Paul Motian and bassist Harvey Swartz. Her recordings since then have been marked by thoughtfull structure, evocative moods, attention to groove and an uncanny sense of lyricism.
On her 1996 duet with guitarist Wayne Krantz, SEPARATE CAGES, Leni unveiled her very personal vocal style for the first time on record. Since then she delved even further into vocals, adding more and more songs to her extensive body of compositions and integrating new musical styles from Blues to World Music.
